Somewhere in the world a man has abducted a little girl. Soon he will rape, torture, and kill her. If an atrocity of this kind not occurring at precisely this moment, it will happen in a few hours, or days at most. Such is the confidence we can draw from the statistical laws that govern the lives of six billion human beings.

i'm presuming that this is the same Sam Harris who wrote "The End of Faith" which i have on my bookshelf, and is a very interesting read.  Recommended.

I think Sam Harris needs to read up on some of the popular theistic responses to the problem of pain and respond to those rather that repeate the same tired arguments we've heard from high school and college philosophy classes over and over ... and over.

Here's a good place to start.
