A plausible case can be made that there was no single individual Jesus.  Amateur historian Earl Doherty is among the most respected scholars to make a case that Jesus was a myth.  His argument is essentially that the Jesus myth was a syncretism of two different movements in Roman-occupied Palestine--one based in Galilee and one based in Jerusalem.  DT, you may not find his argument convincing, but you should at least give it a try.  You can find it at http://www.jesuspuzzle.com/.

Ah, The Jesus Puzzle! I wanted to read that but was side-tracked before I got into it (I desperately clung to that book and two Stephen King novels, none of which I actually found time to read, for so long that I had to pay $40 in late fees for the lot of 'em). I'br been meaning to pick that one up again, but (naturally...) the town library doesn't have it.

At least one professional historian, Richard Carrier*, has found Doherty's argument convincing, and it was largely the bases for the popular documentary The God Who wasn't There.  Just bear in mind that Doherty's carefully researched argument is not offered as a positive proof that Jesus was a myth.  It is only an argument for the plausibility of the mythers' claim.

Carrier. Carrier... Um... where have I heard that name before? :smt017 :P

Keep in mind that I work for one of the largest academic libraries in the country and can probably get you several copies of whatever you want - in PDF, WORD, or just plain text - within a week (provided it isn't incredibly obscure).

Really? Then can you get me, for starters, that Jesus Puzzle (I think Cop just mentioned the author's name...) book I meant to read MONTHS ago?

And feel free to throw in any works for either side that you think are relevant, at your discretion. :-)

That goes the same for high brow historical reviews as well as low brow popular fiction. I'm your literary drug dealer, my man. Ask and ye shall receive.

I know how that goes...you can change, though. It is possible.

...aw, you get the idea.

But hey, maybe this year it'll be true! Gotta keep the faith. [-o<

DT:

I requested that book for you. If you have an e-mail address to which I can send it, let me know. Send me a message with your e-mail address. If not, I can give you a gmail account. That should work.

Not everyone is in Richard Dawkins' situation, where they have both tenure and the support of a world-renowned university.  Once you are tenured, that does not mean that the university can't influence your behavior.  Your office can still end up in the basement next to the coal bin.
Such is the price for standing up for what you believe in, sometimes. It all depends on whether you want to stand or whether you want to play nice.

....and that I have no sense of humor...

That accusation alone is all the proof this world needs that those people are idiots.

Why should any of us put up with people who act like douchebags?

Didn't Jesus have something to say about that?  ;-)

I don't know. What do you think he had to say about it?

That perhaps you ought to learn to get along with the douche bags of the world.  Be a little more tolerant of those you disagree with.

What do you mean by "tolerant?"

Also, and I could be mistaken here, but you seem to think I equate "those I disagree with" with "douchebag." Is that your assumption?

Sure, but He called them Pharisees.

I thought Jesus meek and mild was very nice to the pharisees.  He had nothing but pleasant things to say about them.  Jesus was a diplomat of the finest ability.  He bent over backwards to make peace between rival parties, because as is well known, the kingdom he advocated was of this world.

Also, he drank Earl Grey tea.

Not too strong, mind you, and with honey.
