LOL! How do you do the "spinning Satan" one? I would like to use that when I spout some particularly vitriolic atheist rhetoric...

Did you hear the one about the dyslexic devil worshipper? He sold his soul to Santa...

Do you believe in the devil as an entity, as the evil within humans, or something else entirely, SJ?

I sure hope you return to some of the previous points waiting for your attention...

Yes, I think the 'devil' is a real entity.  I have had enough experiences that to deny the existence of such an entity (or his minions) would essentially mean I should commit intellectual suicide.  I understand that's not enough to persuade you, and that's not why I say it.  Once you are aware of the spiritual battle that wages around you, and take an active role on your side, you find yourself a target.  The existence of such entities is in the category- for me- of undeniable.  It should sooner deny my own existence than deny their existence.

Evil I take to be a corruption of something good.  An evil action is typically going to be a perversion of a good thing.  Adultery is a good example.  Sex is good.  God created us as sexual beings.  There is no problem with people having sex in God's opinion, he just wants it to occur in specific context.  Adultery is a corruption of the good design and intent of the Maker.  Other 'evil' things follow the same pattern.

Evil, St. Augustine said, is moving in a direction away from God.  It is the good apple, falling off the tree, and slowly rotting.  At first, it retains its shape, and even most of its nutrition.  Eventually, it can rot so badly that the good thing that was once there is good for nothing- except, perhaps, as fertilizer.

Quote
As to my expectations of Christians, I guess I would expect people who believe in eternal life and that they are watched over by a benevolent deity to behave in a "better" way than those who believe that "this is it".

If we had all the numbers in for those things, then perhaps we could get a better picture or comparison of the behaviour of thiests vs non-thiests.  I do expect that IF you are going to preach it, you better live it - concerning the thiests.  Otherwise the hypocrisy shines brighter than the message.  This of course does not invalidate the message (gospel/good news) but it does invalidate the one proclaiming it.  I think that you have a point though and it sounds like your expectancy is not as far fetched as Harry's.  And as a further note, a "christian" or one who believes in God can and does commit crimes, get divorced, lies, cheat, etc.  The bible is very real with that kind of information and it a strange comfort to know that the bible does not hide the nature of humanity - it does not paint anyone better than anyone else.

keeping it real, friend, just trying to keep it real. ;-)

Quote
many Christians have a negative view of atheists and imagine that they are not "good" people.

Sad to say, I know this is true.  I don't like it when religious people think that way too.  Good thing, though, that not ALL christians think this way, eh?

Quote
The fact that, as SntJohnny tells me, I will supposedly go to hell for not believing - even though I live a "good" life - says it all from where I'm standing. How can a Christian claim that he does not believe himself superior to someone who deserves eternal d--nation?

Yipes.  "Deserve" sounds so harsh, doesn't it?  This is what snt.johnny posted earlier:   "CHRISTIANS BELIEVE ALL PEOPLE DESERVE TO SUFFER ETERNALLY".

Did you note that snt.johnny included himself in that deserving?  So I doubt he made this comment to make himself feel superior to you, or anyone else.  I believe snt.johnny will claim GRACE, and without GRACE, none would get saved.  He would also quickly agree that ALL do not deserve eternal life either.  One of the points he was trying to make was that if you are aware of a choice/s before you, and you know that one choice will eventually lead you to trouble, then maybe I would agree that you might "deserve" your cake.  What I disagree about that statement is what about those who are not aware?   I would then omit the word "deserve" in that equation.   :?  ... :D

I spent half my childhood nights scared shiftless about the devil after seeing a grown up on TV describe how she came home one day to see Satan himself standing on her stairs - she knew it was him when she noticed his cloven hooves.

Your ridiculous nonsense about the devil reminds me of her ridiculous nonsense, but fortunately I am now old enough to realize that if the lord of darkness were to manifest himself on earth, it would be extremely unlikely that he would materialize on the stairs of a bored housewife in Huddersfield, England, or bother "targeting" those engaged in a "spiritual battle", whatever that is.

Just who is the psychotic here, SJ?

"Your ridiculous nonsense about the devil reminds me of her ridiculous nonsense,"

*shrug*

Are you going to respond to the other points going on in this thread?

"or bother "targeting" those engaged in a "spiritual battle", whatever that is."

Oh, I definately think it is wise you don't venture into areas you are ignorant of.  Move along.  Just a note, though....

"Just who is the psychotic here, SJ?"

If you plan on ridiculing my answers (or me, personally) when they seem to be sincere questions that I answer honestly and without sarcasm or satire, don't be surprised when I    A.  Stop answering  B.  Assume the worst of your intentions behind your question   or C.  Go off on you appropriately.   :smt062

I am sorry about the "psychotic" remark, but for you to call me psychotic and then spout idiotic nonsense about the devil is too much for me to ignore.

"Oh, I definately think it is wise you don't venture into areas you are ignorant of. Move along."

Is this the start of a low rent horror movie? Am I meddling with forces beyond my comprehension? Sorry, SJ, but if you believe that crap I have no intention of arguing with you further on any subject - that sort of voodoo belief completely undermines everything else you say and it becomes pointless for me to argue with your closed mind. Look up the definition of "delusion" when you get a chance and you'll see why.

Good bye and good luck, I'm out of here.

"I am sorry about the "psychotic" remark, but for you to call me psychotic and then spout idiotic nonsense about the devil is too much for me to ignore."

You fail to recall the specific context of my remark.

"Is this the start of a low rent horror movie? Am I meddling with forces beyond my comprehension?"

Well, I think its ironic.  You asked a question.  I answered it honestly.  I explicitly said that my reasons could not be used as evidence for YOU, but for me, it was undeniable.  The irony is that according to your ilk, its our senses we are supposed to be trusting above everything else.  Now you crucify me for trusting my senses- and its not even that I tried to impose them on you.

Yea, you guys are REAL reasonable.

Yes, it is currently beyond your comprehension, and you should be glad that it is.  There is such a thing as knowing things you wished you didn't know.

Whatever.

"Good bye and good luck, I'm out of here."

Don't let the door hit you on your way out.  I didn't realize that your only conversation here was with me.  Perhaps you should apply your delusional test also to geegee, cimics, harry, ragnar, atheistheratickly, and others around here.  But oh well.  There goes another 'free-thinker.'
