Shalom I just wanted to wish you a happy Purim... eat a couple of Hamantaschen for me! "Hevenu Shalom Aleichem" (I think this means "Peace to You" ?)
Thank you for the kind wishes - and I did have a nice Purim.
And your Hebrew is very good. Hevenu = "we bring". Words ending in "U" generally denote 1st person plural (We or Our). Example: Avinu Malkenu = Our Father, Our King. So Hevenu Shalom Alechem = We bring you peace. Shalom Aleichem itself means "peace to you" - much like Salam Alechem (Arabic). So. the words mean "We bring you peace". It comes from a song we sing sometimes during Erev Shabbat service (Friday nights), when we welcome in the messengers and even the bride of Shabbat. What? Jews sing to Angels and a bride? I'll leave that for another thread. Talk about baiting for discussion!
And for those not familiar with the word "Hamantashen" - these are jelly or fruit filled pastries, made in the the shape of a triangle. The word means "Haman's pockets". But the desert is usually called "Haman's Hat". Ok - so he was not a fine dresser. In Israel they are called "Ozney Haman" which is a bit worse. It means: Haman's Ears.
But not to stop already with the education - read on.....
Hamantashen - the rest of the story: Ha = the Hebrew definite article "THE".
Mon = Poppy in Yiddish,
Tash = Pocket in Yiddish.
HaMonTash = the Poppy Pocket.
The fact that Hamon sounds like Haman, led to it becoming a natural desert for Purim. No Purim party would be Purim without.
And now you know the rest of the story!
For those who took time to read this much of my post and kvelling, you deserve a treat. Here is a link that will instruct you on how to make a variety of Hamentashen! "Go ahead, eat, you seem peckish already. Eat, something or I'm going to be sick." <--- words from my mother (of blessed memory).
