Immanence and its role in Mormonism
« on: November 30, 2006, 10:36:12 PM »

To start this off, I have a very simple question.
Do Mormons believe in the Immanence of the Creator?

Uh, ok.  Well, immanence isn't terribly simple, but this is the best summary I can think of.  The immanence of God is the belief that God is in Everything and Everything is God.  You and I, are both part of the greater whole of the Almighty and in truth all have the spark of divinity within us.  We are, literally, part of God.  The truth is, that almost every major religion today (Excepting Buddhism somewhat) believe in the immanence of God, to a greater or lesser extent; for instance, it is a very very big deal in Hinduism, and also in more mystical gnosticism-like religions.

It is perhaps summarized by this statement:
"The Spirit of the Creator is inherent in me, but I am not he"

B.

Your last phrase, to me, is the most important.  I certianly, as a universalist, cannot claim what you have suggested.  Anyone... any religion who claims what you suggest would be in great error to me.

Off the top of my head I would say that Mormons don't believe that.  Certainly JS's first vision should be evidence of that.  JS saw and heard God and Jesus Christ, two seperate beings with bodies of flesh and blood.  Doesn't sound like JS was suggesting that we are part of God.  The Mormons believe, quite literally, that were are spiritually sons and daughters of God.
