The PURPOSE of LIFE.
« on: January 19, 2006, 05:01:46 PM »

Hey, IF you know, then let me in on the secret!!

From a religious perspective, my answer would be this...

imo, of course, lol.

The purpose of life is that we come to KNOW GOD, and therefore, come to know LIFE.

GOD and LIFE are closely linked in scripture.  But that is my personal opinion.  What do you think the purpose of LIFE is, if there is one?

Just thinking out loud.

the purpose of life

I believe there are many purposes for life, most of these are human uses for life, and in my oppinion irrelevant.  So in short the purpose of life can mean many thing. So do you know anymore than you did before? I didn't think so.

There is no purpose to life in general, it is a cosmic accident. Therefore, the purpose of your own life is whatever you want it to be.

The purpose of my life is to be fulfilled and achieve lasting happiness.

Yes.  When you have a moment in your busy schedule, then you can make your move.  I am patient.  I guess one purpose, of the "many" you bring up, is to beat you in our moment of the chess challenge, and for  the second time!!  And this probably would be one of those irrevelant things anyways. So, Ragnar, you really think there is no purpose for the existence of the universe as we know it, huh?  And since we are one product of said "cosmic accident", then you conclude it with..

Quote

Fulfilled and lasting happiness?   I was wondering about this, since many a good religious folks would also answer that in the same vein...

How does one know when they are fulfilled and achieved this happiness?  Is that purpose achievable and real?  Just wondering.

To paraphrase jazz great Louis Armstrong, if you don't know what happiness is, I can't tell you.  ;-)

Can't help but add my two cents...

One of my favorite scriptures...

BofM - Alma 34:
32 For behold, this life is the time for men to prepare to meet God; yea, behold the day of this life is the day for men to perform their labors.
33 And now, as I said unto you before, as ye have had so many witnesses, therefore, I beseech of you that ye do not procrastinate the day of your repentance until the end; for after this day of life, which is given us to prepare for eternity, behold, if we do not improve our time while in this life, then cometh the night of darkness wherein there can be no labor performed.

Rag boy.  I asked "what is the purpose of life" and you answered with an answer of "happiness" or "fullfilment".  I gave my definition and you gave yours.  Then you respond with someone elses words which tells/suggests to me that you don't know and suggests I don't know.  So...who knows what the purpose of life is then?

Just thinking out loud..again.

My point was that happiness is different for everyone. I'm talking long-term, not instant gratification type deal. Achieving it requires much thought and the willingness to try many different things.

Personally, I haven't gotten there yet, but I'm working on it. I'm still exploring. I'll let you know when I find it, and what it is for me.

Some short term type things that make me happy - Blues guitar, a fine cigar, good wine, pasta, swimming, body-surfing, a good orgasm.

Interesting, Rag.  I enjoy some things myself, but they be only a temporary thing, and I KNOW it.

What makes for a lasting thing?  Hope you find that one day since this seems to be your search.

Between the two arrows you will find the purpose of life, the universe and everything.

LOL. The gist of my post was in between the arrows. One on top, one on the bottom, Inbetween them there is nothing. There is no "purpose".

We can say survival is the purpose or continuation of species or something like that, however I believe, due to the lack of any evidence supporting otherwise, there is no pre-conceived reason or purpose for life in which life was then created to serve or achieve.

Right, there is no overriding purpose to life in general.

However, heretic, what do you think the purpose of a human's life should be? For example, why did you join the military?

What is the purpose of a rock?  Was it put on earth just to throw at women who don't abide by God's restrictions on sexual behavior?  ;-)   Does every life form have a purpose?  Does nothing at all exist without a purpose?  If so, then the most important question is:  What is God's purpose?  Does he (or it) even have a purpose?  If not, then why does life need to have one?

Rag boy wrote
Quote

Was this in response to what our friend Harry wrote?

Quote

Did you recognize, Rag boy, that Harry says he "believes"? ...and ..."we can say"? ..and ..."due to lack of any evidence"...and..."supporting evidence otherwise"....etc...ecetera/ecetera...

This is what you agree with?  Why?

Cop then said this

Quote

"What is the purpose of a rock"?  Perhaps for Jesus to give illustration?  Jesus said..."God is able to raise the rocks..." (you find the text :P )

Cop...what life forms don't you think have a purpose?  You don't see purpose at all to anything?

IF you cannot see a purpose...then how am I suppossed to? ;-)

If you take your direction from me, then nothing has a purpose or needs to have one.  ;-)  If I find a rock useful as a weapon, does that mean that its purpose was to be a weapon?  I think not.  We could say that the rock serves us a useful purpose, but that is different from claiming that the rock has an inherent purpose.

And you seem to have avoided answering my question.  Do you believe that God has a purpose?  If not, then why must we?

Nah...not trying to avoid anything...just taking my time here and there...tis all [biggrin

This is my answer...

God has NO PURPOSE.  Hows that?

Exactly!!!  You question.."then why must we?"

I'd rather see purpose....makes life much more meaningful..ya know?
