Evolution and tall basketball players
« on: May 21, 2008, 02:09:49 PM »

People often misconstrue the theory of evolution as a force that causes adaptations, but that is just the wrong way to view it.  There is no fundamental difference between intelligent and natural selection.  Humans are part of the nature that selects for larger populations of descendants, but the mechanism that brings about new traits in a descendant population is purely statistical.

Look at it this way.  Evolution "created" tall basketball players.  How did it do that if coaches aren't actually breeding humans to produce such players?  It is merely an accident of nature that there are short and tall people, but the rules of basketball make coaches prefer tall players over short ones.  And rather than mess with the gene pool, basketball coaches mess with the grading process to ensure that their selections survive academic competition.  A coach will, from time to time, pick a short player who is exceptionally good at throwing baskets or racing underneath outstretched arms, but that is fairly rare.  There are other factors than height that affect the characteristics of basketball players.  By and large, the height of basketball players will continue to increase as the average height of a population of students increases.  That is evolution at work, but not genetically-driven evolution.  Women may prefer taller males as mates, but basketball probably makes a very small impact on their decision on whom to prefer as a marriage partner.
