Atheist Bus Campaign finds their place with TTC
« on: February 05, 2009, 06:34:08 PM »

Apparently the TTC has approved the Atheist Ad...

http://atheistbus.ca/2009/01/28/we-have-approval/

It should be interesting how the Religious Canadians will feel and respond, especially those in Toronto and Ontario.  As it stands right now, from my reading, it seems that Montreal is their other targeted city.  There also have been other targeted cities but their campaign was rejected.  I don't know all the details due to the fact that I previously didn't know about this campaign.

Quite interesting, this is.

Ariane Sherine gives a reason why for this campaign (Richard Dawkins has an appearance on this video too) :  http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/video/2009/jan/06/atheist-bus

Just wanted to share this.  I'm still thinking about how I am thinking/feeling/etc about this TTC decision.  I think I will just let this sink in for a few weeks and in the mean time continue to read about this.

Again, when viewing that video clip, Hawkins mentions that our only weapon is being offensive (the Christian) but it seems that the creator of this campaign was offended... thus the reason for this campaign.  Hmmm...  interesting.

Besides the obvious hypocrisy with these Atheists... I at this time can see some good from this.  Perhaps this will push a new campaign for the Church?  Maybe.  At least it should awaken the Religious to something.

It's supposed to be coming to Calgary (my city) soon which caused quite a stir a few weeks ago when the story was posted on a local TV station's website.

Interesting.  Isn't there a saying.. don't wake a sleeping giant?  or something like that.  heh

I could see why those out east (Halifax area) rejected the Atheist Bus Campaign.  I'm not yet sure where the Quebec people stand on this issue.. but I myself find this as a wake-up call for the church to get even more determined in their own campaigns.... erm.. propaganda?

Looking to see how the results will be in Calgary concerning this.

Interestingly enough, it's the Muslim community here that has spoken first about a counter-campaign. I'm not sure that a counter-campaign is even worth the money, especially if different religions or sects decide to do their own ads. No good can come of that.

The atheist ad itself is rather silly and rhetorical and not really worthy of any response, at least not in a similar fashion. Surely all the money spent on it could go to a worthy cause and forums such as this are far superior and productive for such discussions.

I think that ad is very mild, reasonable and positive. Hopefully, it will get more people thinking about what they really believe and maybe even start living fuller lives here on Earth - which is, to Atheists, Heaven.

Actually, this very question was raised in alot of forums I've read concerning this very thing.  Think of the dollars that Christians and Athiests will/might spend on this.

Maybe this will suprise you Stat but many Christian organizations will actually agree with you here.  :)

Why the heck we don't give up our propaganda (of our beliefs) and just love people and help people and put our money on them?

Simple.. we want to put our MONEY where our teeth is.. as the saying goes.   (something like that)   :?

Now you're talking my language, Z! This world could be almost as nice as the next (if you believe in one) if humans weren't so incredibly stupid and selfish. Unfortunately, that is human nature - and who's fault is that  ...?

Depends on what you mean by "propaganda". To liberal secularists "propaganda" means 'any form of religious expression (other than their own) in view of the public'. So it's really a matter of supporting free speech or not. And if free speech goes, then eventually the suppression of the belief itself follows.

I agree the ad is mild. Not only do I welcome it as an exercise of free speech, but I also recognize it as a sign of the hypocriscy regarding secularist's claims of wanting society to be "neutral".

Any one who has ever uttered "seperation of church and state" as a legitimate policy. Or look up the Holmen Star and Cross incident SJ has frequently reported on.

I'm more interested in seeking an answer.  Finding fault is fruitless.  Humans will be humans whether they be religious or not.

You work that out for yourself since this is what you thought.

Sorry, I was not aware I was speaking to The Riddler  .

Riddle me this, Z, for I will phrase it as a question:

Does God make us who we are?

ahem.. that might be the Ziddler to you now.  ;)

I thought God makes us who we are.

And I thought that we came from the apes.. or some primordial soup.  ;)

So as I might have been once falsely mislead that monkeys were my anscestors or that I came from soupy stuff.... you too might be mislead in your thoughts that  "God makes us who we are."

Sorry, Mr. Ziddler, but you were so busy being clever that you forgot to answer the question, again.

Does God make us who we are?

PS No one thinks monkeys are your ancestors, just your cousins  ...

K...

Does God make us who we are?

Lets take this in baby steps.

My contention/answer would be ... God made us.. the creator of all God is

Your contention/answer would be... shrugs... we just don't know.

Is that a good start?  Or would you posit this differently?
