I started a blog hosting web site.  If you would like your own blog, check this out:

As far as I know, you can.  It definately depends on the blog software used itself.  I'm not familiar with all the kinds that are out there, but I've seen a lot of the feature sets, and a lot of them support both html and xml.

I've been working with wordpress, and it definately uses html.

Ah, that raises another question. By the way, I have no experience with blogs or launching live websites, so excuse these questions if they seem really ignorant.

If I were to pay for this blog service, to make it work I would also have to download software? Is there software available for free, or do you have to buy software? Also, do you need anything else to make this work?

No worries.

"If I were to pay for this blog service, to make it work I would also have to download software?"

My blog service will automatically install your choice of four different blogs.  You will not need to do any downloading or configuring.  Each of those four are listed on that page, and linked to their developer pages.  So you can look at each of the four to see how they look and then tell me which one.

"Is there software available for free, or do you have to buy software?"

The software involved here is free to you, at a small cost to me.  There are other programs other than the four I'll install for you, and you would be free to use them if you wanted, though I wouldn't be able to help you with those.

"Also, do you need anything else to make this work?"

Blogs these days are pretty simple.  You don't need xml or html knowledge to figure it out.  Posting is pretty straight forward, too.  The one that I have come to prefer is wordpress, and its like writing a post on these forums.  The difference is it let's you see the raw html if you want to.

You will probably find that some other tools will be helpful.  For example, if you decide to become more advanced, you'll want to access the server files directly (outside the blog interface) and for that you'll need an FTP program.  A good, free one, is filezilla.  If you are new and just starting out, it could take you awhile before you needed to do that.  The only exception is if you get really ambitious about your site designing- trying to go beyond what the blog software automatically have.

Thanks for the tips. The thing is I have a couple of websites, really little more than html and xml files, that I created for classes. What I would like to do is simply put them up on the blog. This would be possible?

I know I could look into creating actual webpages, but I like the idea of a blog at the same time. This is also a really good price.

This is interesting for me.  I've always been interested in starting my own website, but a blog may do the same thing.

The cost certianly is within my budget.  And sntj...since I appreciate your site so much, probably more than you know, i do wish I could send monetory support..but cannot right now.  The future is bright though...and you can have confidence that support will eventually come your way.

I appreciate your hard work sntj and it will be blessed.  This I am confident of...

Thanks for the kind words, Geegee.  I'll just keep pluggin away.  This is a passion for me, and that's almost enough to carry the day.

I would be more than happy to install blogs for you guys, but you might want to consider the other thing that I posted not too long ago.

http://www.midwestmonitor.com/10ayearplan.html

The blog hosting thing is $5.00, and is a boiled down web hosting account.  You could do web pages on it.  No problem.

The $10.00 a year is five times bigger and has all the bells and whistles.  The only thing it doesn't have is support.  However, for the two of you, I'd also install a blog for you.

The only thing to consider with the 10.00 a year plan is that you'll need a domain.  That's an annual expense out of my hands.  I charge $15.00 for the cost of the domain/yr and the time involved to deal with it.  Or, you can handle the domain registration and renewal.  Anyway, $25 a year is pretty cheap in its own right.

So, keep that in mind as an option.  I'm not trying to sell you up, I'm only pointing out the reality that the blog hosting program is in fact just a baby web hosting account, and if you had any interest in moving beyond a blog to the whole kit and kaboodle, for another $5-20/yr you could have much more.

G- you could let people know about these services (or the ones that make me more money at www.midwestmonitor.com ;)  ) that I offer, and that would be a help, too.

Hey guys, you want me to set you up here?  I'd love to get you started so I can link to you on the blog hosting site.  Will help me if I can show some folks being hosted.

I had another idea.  Tell me what you think.

What if I started up a campaign where I gave away blog sites to people who generated, say, 2 new members to this forum?  Each new member would have to participate for at least 1 week, or 20 substantive posts.

What do you think?

I think it's a great idea. I have an aunt whose family is, not exactly fundamentalist Christian, but they come pretty darn close. I've been debating whether or not to tell them about this site, and this would be the perfect motivation. The reason I haven't told them is if they started posting with any regularity it would be hard for me to resist using personal knowledge against them if we ended up debating here. We haven't really gotten into any heavy debating in person, although they know I am atheist (or they might think I'm still agnostic, we haven't talked about religion at all in a long time), and I wouldn't want to offend them.

But what the hey, I don't think this type of forum is really their thing anyway, but now I will definitely tell them about it.

Terrific.  Ok, I'll look for both of them.  It might be wise to PM me to let me know they are your referrals, or else I won't know they came from you.  I'll trust you're word.  :)

Does a week minimum participation/20 substantive posts (ie, non-TAH) seem fair to you?

Sure, but there's a good chance it won't pan out. I will email them later tonight and will keep you posted. It's a good idea in general, though.

About those files I wanted you to look at to let me know if they will work on a blog, I keep forgetting to send them when I get home. I read this board at work where I have no access to anything, and I always forget to do it when I get home. I will send them late tonight.

johnny, I emailed you those files. If I could use them I will sign up for a blog.

I also emailed my family about the site, but it seems they're not interested.

Okay.  I can try to help ya here.  Anyways, I've already been very busy inviting many as I can to this site already.  I got just one response so far and this one person doesn't feel compelled to get involved here right now.

I am a busy bee..hear me buzz?  LOL.

Any ways, I am seriosly considering the offer, just right now, I am seriously questioning myself whether I can do this at this particular time...and also thinking of how I should format it...perhaps I am thinking to much and should just do it, eh?  LOL

That's what I just did :)  I've always wanted to throw something up on the web, and at 5 bucks a year I figured let me just get it and see what I can do.

When I have something decent to look at I'll post the url, so at the least people can see the basics of what someone with limited techie knowledge can do with johnny's blogs. I should be done with the preliminaries in a few days.
