Against an infinite creator
« on: January 29, 2008, 02:33:02 PM »

1. All personal beings are finite in some way. [confirmed empirical generalization]
2. Therefore, if a personal being created the universe, then probably, it is finite in some way.
3. The God of traditional monotheism is a personal being who created the universe but is not finite in any way.
4. Therefore, the God of traditional monotheism probably doesn

I'm not sure if you're serious or trying to show some flaw in some atheist's argument.

Obviously premise 1 is lacking in detail and premise 3 shows this to be the case.

Sadly he's very serious, and thinks himself to be very clever in trying to disprove something that usually requires a large amount of deep thought with a simple deductive statement. I frankly wonder if he's ever heard of the Trinity before.

Hey EB, did you get my welcome private message?

----------

EB, I hear what you're saying- 4 propositions ending traditional monotheism after all these years?  What have people been thinking?

We might suggest Augustine's 500 page treatise on the Trinity as a good place to start:  http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/1301.htm

Yes indeed. Though I saw it in my e-mail with a "Do not respond." message so I respected it. I'm very much enjoying my short experience here, and am learning a great deal from all sides. If nothing else it's encouraging to know there are others that see the same problems I see with opposing arguements.

Odd, I can't seem to bring up the page. Is it just me?

Ah, well I'm glad I asked about it then.  The email that gets sent is a courtesy from the forum software, so responding to it just doesn't work.  However, that is a feature that can be turned off so that instead you can just get a message-less notification or even no notification at all.  To reply to a private message, you have to do so from the private message section on the forum.  Depending on the theme you're viewing, there should be a place to the top right or in the main menu that says 'messages.'  That will take you to your message center where you can compose or reply to private messages.

I just doublechecked the Augustine link.  She's working for me using Mozilla Firefox.

Now I've got it. Just needed to restart my computer. #-o

Obvious troll is obvious.

I have to ask though, what the heck is a "confirmed empirical generalization"?

I'm pretty sure the answer starts with "bull" and ends with something roughly synonymous to "feces"... it's at the tip of my tongue but just won't come out! GAH! DX
